Today, the study tour group traveled to the Airborne Museum in Saints Mère Èglise. It is dedicated to the history of the American D-day attack on Normandy beach. The museum stands over the site where the famous house that is depicted burning to the ground in the movie “The Longest Day” once stood. It is owned and operated by the American government and is composed of three different exhibits. Each exhibit discusses a different operation and features a different WWII American aircraft. Each year on June 6, a huge ceremony is held on the property to commemorate the battle, those lost in the attack, and those who had to live with the memories of one of the bloodiest days in American history.
Hey Jennie! It sounds like this was a very cool and interesting experience. D-day will always be one of my favorite events to study so I'm pretty envious you got to go to the museum. I can't help but wonder what that ceremony (every June 6th) is like; the atmosphere must be incredible and the museum must be filled with Veterans from all over the world.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, in both elementary and high school, not much was taught to us about D-day. Although I have watched movies about WW2, to actually be on site where the event happened is a totally different experience altogether. What a fantastic adventure it would be to actually attend the ceremony on June 6th. I'm sure relatives and loved ones of those who were lost in battle would attend. To hear their stories would open my eyes to so much!
ReplyDeleteThis is sounds very interesting. Not a lot of people know about D-Day so it is so interesting that there is a whole museum about it. It is very amazing that even to this day they hold a ceremony to honor the lives lost. It was probably very chilling standing at the museum in the area where so many people lost their lives.
ReplyDeleteI also was never really taught anything about D-Day. I knew very little about it. I can't believe there is a whole museum about it and I don't even know much about it.
ReplyDeleteI actually remember learning a lot about D-Day in high school so I think its great that you dedicated some of your time on this trip to learning about it. I've never visited this museum before, but I can only imagine how amazing the ceremony must be every year.
ReplyDeleteI don't know much about D-Day as many of the other people that commented mentioned. I think it is amazing that there is a museum to honor those lost in the battle. I love that there is a ceremony held each year too.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be really cool to visit this museum. I have always interested in American history, and would like to see all of the exhibits here. I hope you had a great trip!
ReplyDeleteThis museum seems like a very interesting place to visit ! It is interesting to me that foreign countries view historic events such as D-Day involving the US military as big of a piece of history as we do in our country. It is also great that these countries honor their own soldiers and those of other countries lost in battle with sites such as this one.

ReplyDeleteI visited the place in 2014. It was amazing to see history come alive. I think learning the history is important but to see the place in person is even more important if you can make it. I learned more when I visited the place compared to studying about it.
This is interesting. I think this would be a great place to visit. I am a little surprised that a country would allow the US to operate a museum and dedicate it to those historic events. Definitely will be adding this museum to my list of places to visit.

This place would definitely be a cool place to visit !It is definitely interesting to me that foreign countries are as interested in history involving the US Military and their own militaries as we are and remain dedicated to honoring historic events such as D-Day.
ReplyDeleteThis would be super cool to see in person and even attend the annual ceremony. This attack played a large role in American and being able to visit a place like this about would be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciated when I read that they hold a ceremony every year to commemorate the battle, those lost in the attack, and those who had to live with the memories of one of the bloodiest days in American history. It is so important that we take time out of our days and reflect on our history.
ReplyDeleteThis is an exhibit that I would personally love and am jealous that I have not seen in person. I am a history major and especially enjoy studying world war II. D Day is one of the most known battles of world war II. As one of the bloodiest moments for Americans in history, it is so important to honor those who took part in that battle and war to this day, as we are here because of their bravery.

This exhibit sounds so interesting! The attack played a huge role on the entire country and seeing this exhibit in person is something that seems very interesting to me. I feel as though it would make me want to learn even more about the topic.
ReplyDeleteI would love nothing more than to spend time at the American Airborne Museum. I have always had such a strong interest in World War II, and have always held the upmost respect and gratitude for those who risked their lives to protect our freedom. I would find it also a surreal experience to walk the beaches of Normandy where D-Day took place, or even just attend one of the annual ceremonies on June 6 to commemorate this massive historical event.
